HUNTINGTON, TX (KTRE) - Last September Diane Jones of Huntington became the first person in East Texas to contract West Nile Virus.
For her it was a very dark time in her life.
"I didn't know I had it I didn't have many of the symptoms and then just, I got real sick" Diane Jones said.
After being misdiagnosed, Jones went into a coma for three weeks and then came out of it in late October where she was then transferred to a nursing home where she underwent months of physical therapy.
Today she still isn't the same.
"I can't walk like I used to at all I can't talk, it affected my speech a whole lot, it's made things really hard on me." Diane Jones said.
It's been hard on her husband David Jones as well who's been by her side from the very beginning. Mr. Jones has been on disability since before the incident but that never discouraged him from holding out hope despite the shock.
"It was devastating, like the whole world just collapsed." David Jones said.
Now with a second case being just recently contracted in East Texas, Jones says that people must take precaution.
"Stay away from the water if you can, especially when it starts to get dark because that's really when they start to come out and eating you up and definitely use some type of bug spray." David Jones said.
Despite the rough year Jones feels very blessed to have his wife with him today.
"He told me it is West Nile it is viral and there's nothing we can do about it except treat the symptoms and pray, well that's what we did." David Jones said.
