NACOGDOCHES, Texas (Press Release)- Stephen F. Austin head coach Clint Conque today announced the addition of quarterback Foster Sawyer to the Lumberjack football program. Sawyer will enroll at SFA, beginning with the winter 2017 semester, and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining with the Lumberjacks.
"We're pleased to add Foster to the Lumberjack family as he brings a wealth of experience and maturity to our program," Conque said. "Foster is a very talented player looking for the opportunity to compete at the quarterback position. He is a high character young man that will be an incredible asset to SFA football both on and off the field. We are excited to be a part of his very bright future."
Sawyer comes to Nacogdoches after spending three seasons at TCU in Fort Worth. After redshirting in 2014, Sawyer played in 12 games over two seasons for the Horned Frogs with a pair starts. The 6-5, 230-pound quarterback completed 37 of his 82 passes for 433 yards and three touchdowns, throwing for a career-high 107 yards at Oklahoma in 2015.
The Fort Worth native was a two-year starter at All Saints Episcopal School, leading the Saints to back-to-back TAPPS state championships in 2012 and 2013. Sawyer threw for 2,725 yards and 31 touchdowns as a junior, followed by a 2,867-yard, 48-touchdown performance as a senior, earning Star Telegram Player of the Year honors for the DFW Super Team. Sawyer was listed as a four-star signee following his prep career, ranked as the No. 2 quarterback prospect in Texas and 13th nationally by Scout.com.
Sawyer will be expected to compete right away for the quarterback starting position following the graduation of seniors Zach Conque and Hunter Taylor. With the addition of Sawyer, coach Conque has now added six transfers to the Lumberjack roster as he joins wide receiver Terian Goree (North Texas) and offensive lineman Josiah Hunter (Chaffey College) as the offensive additions.
SFA's coaching staff continues to put in the long recruiting hours as the calendar continues to count down to National Signing Day on Wednesday, February 1st.
