LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin school was honored Thursday with a special award.

St. Cyprian's School was honored today by Keep America Beautiful for the student's efforts with the group's youth initiative program. The school is the first in the nation to get the honor.

The award is given out for schools that improve their litter clean up and improve the look of the campus.

"What Keep America has done with this program and others is to begin to look at how much litter is there," said KAB education consultant Dr. Cheryl Boyette. "Where's it coming from, and how do we end it? The mission for Keep America Beautiful is to end litter, not just clean it up or make people aware of it."

The school said they have been able to do research and lower their amount of waste on campus by 30 percent.
