Unemployment Rates Down, But Jobs Maybe Hard to Find

The holidays are here and if you are looking for a job to have extra spending money for those Christmas presents, you might be out of luck.

That is due to the fact that the unemployment rate is so low. Across the state, the average was 3.9%, in Lufkin it was the same, and in Nacogdoches it was 3.6% last month.

While that is good news, the business service manager for Workforce Solutions Peggy Muckelroy says it has some drawbacks.

"It makes it harder to find qualified staff to fill job vacancies," she said.

And right now, there are management jobs available in retail and fast food restaurants during the holidays. But Muckelroy says most jobs won't be available until after January and February.

Muckelroy said same manufacturing plants are shut down right now temporarily for maintenance.

But, she says don't give up, even if you are not having any luck, keep looking.  While deep East Texas has lost jobs in certain areas, the area is gaining jobs in others.

In fact, Texas is the only state that had an increase in manufacturing jobs last year.
