Heroes Flight: East Texas veterans tour Air Force Memorial
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KLTV) - A group of East Texas veterans that set out at the beginning of the week on a trip to Washington, D.C., sponsored by Brookshire’s, is scheduled to return home today.
This is the final stop on the Brookshire's Heroes Flight, the Air Force Memorial. After, the veterans will be loading the buses and heading back to East Texas. We talked to one of the Air Corps veterans about the beauty of this particular monument built in their honor.
"It's unreal, how they got that up there," said veteran Max Wilson.
The Air Force possibly had the greatest challenge when coming up with a design for their memorial. The Navy can easily show water through fountains, the Army has the medium of land but the Air Force had the task of making air tangible.
It's beauty. In fact, everything these veterans have witnessed on this entire trip has been so appreciated.
"Oh this trip has been out of this world it's just unreal," Wilson said. "Brookshire's, I can't thank them enough. But I'll try to do it. But this is great. This is great."
Personally, the Air Force Memorial is my favorite of all the memorials we have visited as far as beauty goes. It is just something to see. The spiers go up 270 feet into the air. The spiers stand for the three principles that guide the Air Force: integrity, service and excellence.
It is something to see. If you come to D.C., please come visit the Air Force Memorial. If you are able to welcome these guys home this afternoon they'd love to have you there waving a flag.
We should be arriving back at the parking lot of FRESH by Brookshire's between 4:30 and 4:45 p.m.
With this trip, Brookshire's has now taken 278 veterans on all-expense paid trips to D.C. You can see all our coverage and slideshows from this Heroes Flight at KLTV.com. Just look for the Heroes Flight logo at the very top of the homepage.
And Brookshire's is now accepting applications from WWII and *Korean War veterans for possible future trips. You'll find information on that in the Big Red Box on our website.
