OXNARD, California (KLTV) - The Dallas Cowboys opened training camp Tuesday with Coach Brian Schottenheimer entering his second season as head coach. Schottenheimer said he expects his offense to push the defense in camp.

Stephen Jones, the team’s VP and CEO, addressed several topics at a press conference, including the team’s off-season activity, a question about Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby, and contract discussions for defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

‘Not a quiet off-season’

Stephen Jones said the team’s off-season was productive.

“It was not a quiet off-season for us, and it was a great off-season for us,” Jones said.

Jones said the Cowboys continue to evaluate roster additions.

“There’s always moves that you can make to be better. I mean, we’re entertaining thoughts on players as we speak. Right now. I mean, Will does an amazing job of getting the players and putting them in front of Jerry, myself, Schotty, so we’re always looking for ways to get better,” Jones said.

Crosby question raised at camp

A question about Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby came up during the press conference. Jones was asked why the Cowboys did not revisit a potential deal for Crosby after talks with the Baltimore Ravens fell apart.

“Why did you walk away from Maxx Crosby when it fell apart with the Ravens? And not revisit that then — we didn’t know, no, because there’s nothing more to elaborate about. But we did not walk away,” Jones said.

Pressure to reach playoffs

Jones said he does feel pressure heading into the season, but described it in terms of the team’s opportunity.

“That is a good pressure, to be involved with a group that has — really they can do something they haven’t been a part of. So we’re — William said he’s never been part of a playoff team. I think about that — that player. As accomplished as he is, hasn’t been part of a playoff,” Jones said.

Eagles deal puts spotlight on Williams contract

The Cowboys’ NFC East rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, signed defensive tackle Jalen Carter to a four-year, $152 million extension worth up to $160 million, making him the highest-paid defensive tackle in league history. Carter is a two-time Pro Bowl selection.

Jones said Cowboys defensive tackle Quinnen Williams is also due for a new deal.

“Absolutely. I mean, we are very open to that. We want Quinnen here for the long haul, obviously. We have a lot of resources tied up in him. And he knows what we think about him. He has had some discussions with his agent about how to go about the process, but certainly he’s one of the best in the business,” Jones said.
