OXNARD, California (KLTV) - The Dallas Cowboys opened training camp Friday with much of the focus on a defense looking to improve from last season.

While the offense drew attention last year, it is the defensive unit generating conversation at camp this summer. Cornerback Daron Bland, returning from injury, is viewed as a key piece of that turnaround.

Bland back on the field

Bland missed games last season due to injury and said the time away was difficult.

“It’s also my personal injury and being able to miss games like that — rough, frustrating,” Bland said. “Trying to get back on the field. I’m always one trying to push himself to be better. So it was hard to take that setback.”

Schottenheimer eyes depth at safety

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said he has high expectations for the safety room, including first-round rookie Caleb Downs.

“The flexibility that JT gives us — when you get a guy like Caleb Downs, our safety room is stacked, quite honestly,” Schottenheimer said. “Guys flying around yesterday. I’d be remiss — Elijah Clark, this guy all over the field, taking shots on the ball, moving fast.”

Downs said he is focused on learning the system.

“I really just try to be a student of the game, pay attention to what we’re trying to do,” Downs said. “The biggest thing is just being able to see the game and make the play when my number is called.”

Overshown returns from knee injury

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, a native of Arp, Texas, also drew notice at camp. Overshown said he is fully recovered from a knee injury and is eager for the season.

“I’ve been waiting on this — having a full, healthy season of football,” Overshown said. “Not participating in the spring, having to do my own workouts in the summer, then coming here — not being on the sidelines watching. My body’s been ready for this. I’m saying it’s gonna be my best season in all my football years. That’s how excited I am about this year.”

The Cowboys’ official training camp opens Saturday. The Touchdown Sportswriters Organization camp wrapped up Friday.
