Tyler Cowboys prepare for Saturday game, focus on community and character
Coach says program aims to develop young men beyond wins and losses
TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The Tyler Cowboys have a game Saturday at Moore Middle School, their practice grounds.
Coach Jessie Taylor said the program is about more than winning and losing.
“It’s a great feeling to see these kids grow up like a sexy a lot of kids with coached played for John Tyler. Move onto the college level and different things like that, just an impact of being a role model. I’ll say that because a lot of them need that nowadays,” Taylor said.
For five years, Taylor and Brandon Wesney have worked with the players to help them develop character.
“Is a compete in battle against their own, their peers make them understand respect each other on the field. Also take on the bragging rights. Gotta go out and compete. That’s what we practice,” Taylor said.
“Derrick McFall, he went on to play for SMU and be doing great so that’s just to show you some of the talented kids and things that they turn out to be great athletes. And leaders in the community as well,” Wesney said.
Many of the players will go on to play at Tyler and Legacy high schools, which organizers say will add familiarity to that rivalry.
