Etoile rallies together to help ailing father keep promise to daughter

ETOILE, TX (KTRE) -

An East Texas community is rallying around a sick single father and his 14-year-old daughter as they try to beat the odds.

Randy Bridges recently found out the cancer he thought he had beat is back.

He is a humble man and has a hard time asking for or accepting help but a close family friend has taken on all the asking and organizing, to help keep a promise Bridges made to his daughter and hopefully to make a dent in medical bills.

Randy Bridges has multiple myeloma. A cancer that affects the plasma cells in bone marrow. He has been in remission for several years but recently found out the cancer is back.

Bridges friend, Danielle McMullen, is spear heading an effort to get Etoile involved in several upcoming fundraiser's that will help Randy keep a promise he made to his 14-year-old daughter Millie.

McMullen said, "His only regret in life would be never built him or Mille the house that he promised her."

"Etoile is coming together," said McMullen. "Our goal is to build them a home. He cleared his land a few years ago and cut the lumber to build his house and just with money and illness it never happened so our ultimate goal is to build them a home and then we're also trying to provide support for transpiration, medical bills and expense that involve him getting treated."

Bridges and his daughter currently live in a travel trailer over-looking the Attoyac River in Nacogdoches county.

McMullen has already raised $2,000 through a silent auction and has a brown bag lunch event planned this Saturday at the Etoile Fire Department. A third fundraiser is in the works.

McMullen said, "I'm just a person. I don't have all the answers so where I've left off….other people have picked up and they've come together and it's so wonderful to see such kind people."

All the money raised will go directly towards helping the Bridges family build a home and pay for Randy's treatment for multiple myeloma.

The Building Bridges Benefit, Brown Bag Lunch Event is scheduled for Saturday, March 16 at 11:00AM at the Etoile Fire Department. Each lunch is $3 (includes: ham/turkey sandwich, chips, soda/water & homemade dessert).

A cajun food & crawfish boil is in the works for Saturday, April 6th at 5PM. The location is to be determined.
