East Texas church hosts 2nd annual ‘Night to Shine’ prom for people with special needs
NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - The Timber Creek Church in Nacogdoches held their second annual Night to Shine event for people with special needs.
This free event was created by the Tim Tebow Foundation to create an inclusive prom experience and bring faith, hope, and love to those needing a brighter day.
Participant Amanda Venegas said, “It’s definitely an experience to be with my niece on one of her special nights, and I want her to have that magical night and memories to keep forever.”
Night to Shine is a worldwide prom held for people 13 years and older with special needs.
Coordinator Meagan Campbell says God placed on her heart to start this event locally to love and reach a unique community.
“I just wanted a place where they aren’t bullied, they aren’t looked down on, they aren’t the different crowd. They’re just in and they’re accepted, and they’re loved. It’s not a pity party, it’s a fun time for them,” said Campbell.
About 170 guests filled the room.
The night was a full prom experience involving dance, horse and carriage rides, food and more.
“We really want a community that is largely overlooked at times to know that they are seen, and they are valuable,” said Campbell.
This being their second year attending the prom, Venegas said this experience gave her niece Chesli Wilson a chance to be a normal teenager despite her health issues.
“I think it shows a vast amount of inclusion in the importance of giving every abled person the same adventures and memories as those that may not have a disability,” said Venegas.
“They have people that are rooting for them, that are cheering them on, that are praying for them, and really want the absolute best for them, and that they are good enough just as they are,” said Campbell.
Communities worldwide were able to take part in this national event creating memories families can hold onto forever.
