Affidavit: Gun Barrel City man fired by accident in deadly shooting of girlfriend
GUN BARREL CITY, Texas (KLTV) - A Gun Barrel City man arrested Sunday for a fatal shooting may have fired by accident, a new document says.
John David Bunch-Stiles, 23, was arrested Sunday after the shooting death of his girlfriend, Mackenzie Wisdom, 22, of Gun Barrel City. According to an arrest affidavit KLTV requested from Henderson County, Bunch-Stiles told authorities the gun went off while he was transferring it between holsters.
The affidavit says law enforcement officials arrived at the scene around 4:08 p.m. for a shooting call to find Bunch-Stiles in the front lawn flagging down officers. When they approached the man, he reportedly told them he had shot his girlfriend by accident.
Once Wisdom was found in the home, responders attempted life-saving measures until she could be taken to a nearby hospital. She was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:46 p.m.
Bunch-Stiles was taken to the Gun Barrel City Police Department, where the affidavit says he explained how the shooting happened. According to Bunch-Stiles, he had been taking his gun out of a holster he’d been carrying it in and moving it to a soft holster to store it in the nightstand, the document says. It goes on to say the gun went off during the transfer, hitting Wisdom in the upper right shoulder while she lay on the bed.
The document says Bunch-Stiles admitted to the offense of criminal negligent homicide, and he was booked on the charge early Monday. Jail records say he bonded out later that same day for $30,000.
