TRINITY COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) - An SUV that veered into oncoming traffic and struck a tanker-hauling tractor-trailer Christmas Day may have caused far worse damage if not for quick responses from other drivers and deputies, Trinity County officials said.

The county sheriff said on a social media post that the driver fell asleep behind the wheel and did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Video shows Trinity County deputies following the SUV as it swerved into the opposite lane before colliding with the tractor-trailer.

“It can pose a serious hazard to yourself and other drivers on the road,” said Tim Monzingo, a spokesperson of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), describing the dangers of drowsy driving.

Monzingo said fatigue reduces a driver’s ability to react and maintain control.

“If you’re falling asleep, you don’t have control of your faculties. You’re not paying attention to what is going on around you, and you’re not watching for other vehicles,” he said.

Drowsy driving can be as dangerous as driving while intoxicated.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, being awake for 20 hours produces impairment comparable to a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08, the U.S. legal limit for driving.

“It’s a serious issue; it can be just as dangerous as driving intoxicated behind the wheel,” Monzingo added.

Recognizing the signs of fatigue can help drivers avoid peril.

Officials list frequent yawning, increased blinking, drifting into other lanes and difficulty maintaining proper speed as common warning signs.

Monzingo recommended that drivers on longer trips plan rest stops.

“Take time to look at your route, and plan out possible stops. It’s more important to be well rested and in control of your vehicle than it is to arrive at a certain time,” he said.
