JASPER, Texas (KTRE) - American building materials manufacturer Louisiana-Pacific Corporation plans to cut 150 jobs next month as it reduces oriented strand board production at its Jasper plant, according to the company and a notice from the Texas Workforce Commission.

The company, also known as LP Building Solutions, filed the notice Sept. 1 in compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN Act).

The WARN Act is a federal labor law requiring businesses to provide 60 calendar days’ advance written notice before plant closures or mass layoffs.

The company plans to cut the positions Oct. 2 at its mill located at at 5110 U.S. Highway 190 East in Jasper, according to the notice.

In a press release issued on the same day as the WARN Act notice, LP announced it would indefinitely curtail oriented strand board production next month at its Jasper facility due to weak demand.

The Jasper plant produces approximately 475 million square feet on a 3/8-inch basis of oriented strand board, according to the release.

Oriented strand board is an engineered material commonly used in construction as a cheaper alternative to plywood to build homes and other structures.

“This decision is not a reflection of the performance or commitment of the Jasper team, whose contributions have helped strengthen LP for many years,” Louisiana-Pacific CEO Jason Ringblom said in a statement.

In light of the mass layoffs, the company said it plans to offer job search and career transition support and help employees apply for open positions at other LP facilities, according to the release.
