WACO, Texas (KWTX) - THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE---

President Donald Trump will not visit Waco next Tuesday as planned. The Secret Service confirmed the cancellation Thursday morning, according to McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara.

Trump is now expected to hold a rally in Corpus Christi next Tuesday instead. No official reason has been released for the change.

Security meeting canceled

McNamara said his department was scheduled to meet with the Secret Service at 10 a.m. Thursday to finalize security plans for the Waco visit. Instead, the agency called to confirm the president would not be coming.

Tickets for the Waco event had been confirmed, but a venue had not yet been announced.

Supporters disappointed

State Rep. Pat Curry, District 56, said the cancellation disappointed supporters who had signed up to attend.

“Thousands of people signed up. There’s a lot of disappointment, obviously. I’m sad that it didn’t happen here this time, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be back,” Curry said.

Curry said a second Trump visit would have drawn national political attention to Waco.

“Most towns don’t get the opportunity for presidents to come in. Trump comes here because this community is so great, and he’s got a lot of friends here,” Curry said.

Democratic Party reacts

McLennan County Democratic Party Chairman Mark Hays had been discussing a possible counter-protest before the cancellation. Hays said the change removes a potential disruption on election day.

“I think it’s a good thing that he’s not coming. We don’t need anything that disrupts traffic and keeps people from the polls,” Hays said.

Hays also said he doubts the rally would have changed many votes.

“I don’t think that his appearance here would have made a lot of difference in the voting one way or another,” Hays said.

President Donald Trump will visit Waco on Tuesday, Oct. 27 to support Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton at a rally for Paxton’s U.S. Senate campaign, according to Republican National Convention officials.

Trump last visited Waco in March 2023, when he held his first 2024 presidential campaign rally at the Waco Regional Airport.

U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions said he received a call from the Secret Service last week about the possibility of Trump making a stop in Waco.

Referencing Trump’s campaign stop in 2023, Sessions said, “The president started here several years ago. I think the president’s gonna end here.”

Sessions said he expects locals to travel in from surrounding counties, saying, “when people who live in this town see him, they want to shake his hand. They want to pat him on the back, and they want to be a part of the success of the American Dream, and that’s what this will allow.”

McLennan County Republican Party Chairman Chris DeCluitt said the choice to pick Waco is strategic.

“Waco is a solid red area. So he knows that he is very welcome here and that we want him here. And Trump is, I believe, coming here to help bolster the ticket,” DeCluitt said.

DeCluitt said he was giddy when the news broke, saying Trump did not randomly pick Waco and is coming back because he knows he’s going to get the right welcome here.

Democrats plan outreach, possible protest

McLennan County Democratic Party Chairman Mark Hays said his party will answer the visit with its own voter outreach.

“While they’re all over there listening to Trump, our people will be out knocking on doors. Our people will be calling. We’re going to do the work of winning the election,” Hays said.

Hays said Democratic candidate for governor Gina Hinojosa is also expected in Waco Tuesday, but those details are still being finalized.

He said a protest is not out of the picture once the president’s venue is released.

“If you’re going to protest, you have to have a safe place to protest. Once we know the location, we’ll be able to look at other locations, perhaps near there, where we might do something,” Hays said.

Hays said the party could skip a protest if there is not a safe, practical location and focus instead on Hinojosa’s visit and voter turnout.

Doors for the rally will open at 2:30 p.m. The event is expected to begin at 4:30 p.m. and Trump is expected to take the stage at 6 p.m. The location is to be determined.
