Trump promises cash payments ahead of midterms
President ties $5,000 dividend and other payments to GOP keeping control of Congress
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - President Donald Trump is promising a series of cash payments to voters as Republicans seek to maintain control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections.
At the RNC midterm convention in September, Trump pledged to send $5,000 to every American adult if the GOP retains control of Congress.
“Because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said Sept. 9.
Since the Dallas convention, Trump has continued to make additional promises.
He said he would send $8 billion in direct payments to U.S. farmers, who he said have been hit by tariffs and record diesel prices.
Trump also announced a new program that would provide as much as $30,000 to any American who reports a tip about government fraud.
In Greenville, N.C., Trump made a promise to Marine Corps veterans who have claims against the U.S. over contaminated water at Camp Lejeune.
“If we win the House and the Senate, I am directing the Department of Justice to settle all remaining legitimate claims as soon as possible,” Trump said.
Democrats have accused the president of trying to buy votes with the many promises made in the final weeks of the campaign.
It remains to be seen whether Trump can deliver on the promises, or whether the proposals will affect the outcome of the midterm election.
