NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - Stephen F. Austin State University kicked off its homecoming celebration with a parade through downtown Nacogdoches, drawing alumni and community members together to mark annual traditions.

The event featured the SFA Marching Band alongside university supporters who gathered to celebrate school spirit.

Vincent Adams, who graduated in 1988 and now lives in Fort Worth, said he returns to Nacogdoches each homecoming season to watch the parade and reflect on his college years.

“Just to come home and rekindle and see old friends and make new ones and celebrate the Lumberjacks,” Adams said. “Had some great years here. I was blessed with a full athletic scholarship. I played and had some great times, so it’s always good to come back to Nacogdoches.”

Adams said the downtown setting is one of his favorite aspects of the event, noting the route runs directly through the area’s historic district.

Fellow 1988 graduate Chris Flanagan said the parade serves as an important bridge between the university and the local community.

“I think what it does it brings a lot of identity to this community, especially with the college,” Flanagan said. “It’s kind of a tradition. It’s always been a tradition. So, we identify this time of year with Stephen F. Austin and it’s coexistence with the town.”

In addition to the parade, alumni said they are following the Lumberjacks football team, which remains undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the FCS this season.
