Baby shot in face, 2 others injured in Nacogdoches accidental gunshot

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

The Nacogdoches Police Department responded to a report of an accidental gunshot at an apartment in Oak Hill Plaza that injured three people, including an 8-month-old baby girl early this morning. The infant was shot in the face.

All three of the injured people were treated at a local hospital. The baby was transferred to a Houston hospital and is in serious condition.

"The case is still under investigation," Detective Greg Sowell, the public information officer for the Nacogdoches Police Department, said. "Right now, it is being treated as an accidental shooting.

NPD officers and Nacogdoches firefighters and paramedics responded to the apartment complex, which is located in the 1500 block of Dolph Street on a medical assist call at 1:58 a.m. today.

According to police reports, several people were in the apartment at the time of the shooting. A 19-year-old woman was seated holding the infant. At the same time, a 21-year-old man was unloading a 9 mm pistol.

When the pistol accidentally discharged, it struck the man in his left hand. It then struck the young woman in the left hand before striking the baby in the face. The bullet continued on and entered the residence next door, where it lodged in a piece of furniture. No one was injured in the adjoining apartment.

The investigation into this incident is continuing. No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made in this incident.
