UPDATE 5:00 P.M.: Five students have been arrested in connection to a shooting that happened in the Odessa High School Parking lot, each faces a variety of charges related to the shooting, but those specific charges have not been released yet.

Around 9:45 this morning school district police were notified about 9-1-1 calls of a gunshot in one of the parking lots of Odessa High School. The school was put on lockdown while law enforcement investigated.

One student was shot in the foot, received first aid and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to Superintendent Dr. Scott Muri, the shooting was an isolated incident and did not target the school.

ECISD police believe the shooting was specific to those involved in the fight. Dr. Muri said today in a news conference that the district believes the shooting happened after an off campus disagreement between the specific students involved.

“I’m very angry at the behavior of these students,” said Dr. Muri. “Violence does not have a place on our campuses or in our community. We must work together with parents to equip our students to solve problems in other ways than using violence.”

Dr. Muri also confirmed ECISD police are taking the lead on the investigation.

The district thanked its parents and staff in a statement that said:

We want to commend the OHS students and staff who responded immediately to the reports of a gunshot and implemented our lockdown procedures and then later the Hold/Secure procedures. They acted bravely to keep themselves and others safe. We also want to thank OHS parents for their patience in a very scary situation. Those who called to check on their children or went to the school to pick them up were calm and understanding as the school’s staff tried to make sure the release was orderly and safe.
