Person fined more than $5,000 for intentionally waking sleeping polar bear

(CNN) – Waking a sleeping polar bear has cost one person more than $5,000.

Officials said the person involved in the incident was aboard a vessel in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago earlier this month.

People on board then spotted a bear sleeping on land.

The person then intentionally sounded the ship’s foghorn, waking the bear and causing it to move to another location.

Svalbard law prohibits people from unnecessarily disturbing, luring or pursuing polar bears.

The violator agreed to pay a fine of 50,000 Norwegian kroner, or about $5,300.
